Thirteen of the 41 belt-positioning booster seats the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety evaluated with the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute last October did such a poor job of improving the fit of lap and shoulder belts for children that the Institute doesn’t recommend them at all.
“We evaluated the safety belt fit boosters provide, not crash protection,” says Institute president Adrian Lund. “This is because unlike child restraints, boosters don’t restrain children in crashes. They simply position children so lap and shoulder belts are in the right place to restrain them.” More importance was assigned to lap belt fit. All of the best-bet boosters locate this belt on children’s upper thighs.
Restraint seat should not go straight to a regular seat and seatbelt. A booster seat that meets federal safety standards is necessary to help the child make the transition from a child’s car seat to the regular car seat.
An adult-sized seat belt alone is 60 percent less effective than a booster seat.
Does Your Child Need a Booster Seat?
How do you know if your child needs to be in a booster seat? Children who have outgrown a child safety seat should ride in a booster seat until they are at least eight years old, or four feet, nine inches tall. Are Booster Seats Really Safe?
Children should stay in their car safety seat as long as possible before moving to a booster seat. High-back and backless booster seats are available, and should be used until your child can correctly fit in lap and shoulder seat belts. Never use a booster seat with just a lap belt, as serious injury may result.
Well a lot of people may not be aware of booster seats. Nope, you can’t find booster seats in there. Booster seats are a specialized kind of seat for children and designed to protect them from injury in a car accident. Children 12 and under should sit in booster seats because they are not yet big enough for the adult seats.
Booster seats help protect the child’s upper body with either the shoulder belt or with the shield. Booster seats are comfortable for children because it allows for their legs to bend normally. Booster seats can also reduce slouching, which is a cause of poor lap belt fit.
There are several kinds of booster seats. There are belt-positioning boosters, which are booster seats without shields. This booster seat should only be used with the vehicle’s lap and shoulder belt. Some of these booster seats have a high back to give head support taller children.
There are also booster seats with removable shields for children weighing below 40 pounds. i hope this is useful for you… thanks!!
