Wood pellets are a uniform standardised modern renewable fuel. Wood pellets are ideal for automated systems in stoves and boilers to generate heat. Pellets flow like a liquid, therefore small auger systems can be used in stoves and boilers to feed the fire at a controlled rate, to achieve a consistent and efficient burn, and temperature can also be regulated and kept at a constant level for user comfort. As pellets have a high density, consistent size and moisture content, this gives the fuel the ability to burn efficiently. Currently the most popular form of wood pellets is a premium wood pellet. Premium wood pellets are made from softwoods and hardwoods. Premium wood pellets have a very low ash and moisture content. This means they produce the most heat and produce the least amount of maintenance for the user the deal with; these are the reasons for their popularity. However as the fuel pellet market grows there is simply not enough softwood and hardwood to meet the demands and potential of the fuel pellet market. Biomass pellets such as straw and grass pellets are growing in popularity.

So is burning other types of pellets, for example straw and grass pellets as easy as burning wood pellets and premium wood pellets? Well no, certain issues have to be addressed before efficient consistent burning can take place. First practically all biomass pellets are going to have a higher ash content than premium wood pellets. You can produce fuel pellets from even cardboard, however these pellets can produce ash content even as high as 15%. Most pellet boilers and stoves will only operate properly with premium wood pellets. Therefore in many stoves and boilers, it simply isn’t possible to achieve an efficient and consistent burn from such high ash fuels. More pellet stoves and boilers are being designed to handle high ash fuel pellets, however they are still in the minority and they also generally cost more.

If you are looking to purchase your first pellet stove or boiler, or you are looking for a replacement, you should consider looking for a stove or boiler, which can handle higher ash content pellets. The simple reasons for this are flexible to change to other fuels if the need arises. There are only so much softwood and hardwood resources available, and as wood pellets become more popular the demand for these resources will increase. Then demand will start to pass supply, and then the price of premium wood pellets will increase. If your stove or boiler is only capable of burning premium wood pellets you will be trapped into paying whatever price of premium pellets is. However if your unit were more flexible you would have the option to choose cheaper biomass fuel pellets.
