Kinabalu Park is Malaysia’s first World Heritage Site designated by UNESCO in December 2000 for its ‘superior universal values’ and role as one of the world most important biological sites. Mt. Kinabalu, the majestic summit of Borneo is the focal point of the Park. The highest mountain between the Himalayas and the Snow Mountains of Papua Barat (New Guinea Island) this magnificent granite massif stands at a height of 4,095.2m (13,435ft).

The Kinabalu Park covers an area of 754 sq. km., from the Park Headquarters area to Poring Hot Springs, 40km away and northwards to Mandalon, almost reaching the Kudat Highway. Established as a state park in 1964, this botanical paradise is blessed with an astonishing variety of flora and fauna. It is home to about 1,200 species of orchids, 26 species of rhododendrons, 9 species of Nepenthes pitcher plants, over 80 species of fig trees, over 60 species of oaks and chestnut trees, 100 species of mammals, 326 species of birds, and the list goes on!

The Park has continually attracted top naturalists and botanists from around the world and has been proclaimed an area with the richest diversity of flora and fauna.

Mountain Torq’s alpine-style accommodation at Pendant Hut, located at 3,270m a.s.l on Mount Kinabalu Laban Rata rock slab, offers its guests a cosy, eco-friendly hut with a combination of dormitory, VIP and private rooms. From here, it’s merely a 15 to 20 minutes walk to the start of the via ferrata.

Needless to say, Mountain Torq’s via ferrata has played a major role in raising awareness on Mount Kinabalu among mountain climbers around the world.

“Mountain Torq is pleased to be able to play a part in the advancement of Mount Kinabalu and the exotic island of Borneo as a world-class destination for sports and adventure tourists.. This is the first time a mountaineering activity is formally being introduced to Mount Kinabalu since 1964, when Kinabalu Park was first opened to the public,” Wilfred explained.

With the availability of this mountaineering activity, he can confidently say that Borneo is now a world-class adventure destination with a myriad of ocean and mountain activities..
