Movie Ratings And What They Suggest For Your Family

The large movie studios have long been giving movies a rating to let folks know how proper or improper the movie may be for particular viewers. In general it is to safeguard children from excessively violent or sexual scenes or it may even be as simple as smoking or bad language. The concern is whose judgment rates the film. Many people will disagree with a rating and there have even been copyright cases where a company deliberately removed scenes that were deemed inappropriate, even when a movie was rated PG or PG-13.

Since movies are all so diverse it is particularly challenging to uphold a standard that holds true for every solitary movie. And then there are the different things that people find unpleasant. One person may consider that a lone nude scene depicting possible sexuality is disgusting, while another may deem violence or a suicide by gunshot scene to be more offensive. Distinct people have different concerns when it comes to what they judge is suitable to see at a movie.

But the rating system is based upon theme and content. It is really up to parents and individuals to resolve if a movie is fitting or not. One should not rely absolutely upon a rating system but only utilize it as a general guide.

A G rating means that the film has been deemed apt for general audiences. It may or may not be a children’s film but it will not have sexual scenes, swearing, drug or alcohol use, cigarette smoking or violence.

PG stands for parental guidance. There may maybe be some short moments of the abovementioned scenes but it is not excessive. Parents are cautioned to be alert that these short scenes may exist. PG-13 is a stronger PG warning. These movies are predictably unacceptable for kids under the age of 13. There may be some nudity, suggested sexuality or violence. This rating is mainly for a movie that does not deserve an R rating but is still worse than the predictable PG.

An R rating restricts everybody under 17 from the movie theater without the custody of a parent or adult guardian. These movies often depict sexual scenes. There may also be drug abuse or extreme violent behavior. Parents are encouraged to watch these movies themselves before making any judgment to allow a young person to watch the movie.

There is a new rating that is NC-17. No one under the age of 17 will be admitted into the movie theater. This movie may not of necessity be pornographic but it will contain adult content, be it sexual, violent or other that makes it fully inappropriate for a person under 17 years of age. As with most things a parent needs to make a cognizant decision on what is or is not proper for their family. The ratings system is just a general guide.
