Paying For Lasik Surgery
I was charged around $2,200 per eye for my lasik surgery close to three years ago and that seems to be pretty close to most pricing I have seen recently as well as quotations from acquaintances who have also had lasik done recently. My price included all of the pre lasik exams and the post-surgical care too. No additional enhancements were necessary for me, but if I had needed enhancements I would have been charged a few hundred extra.
Through my own experience and research, I think it is fair to say that you can expect the cost to settle approximately $1700 to $3000 per eye. That seems like a big spread, but your total will depends on the kind of lasik you have, the amount of correction necessary and surrounding components such as pre and post surgical care provided. My estimate is based on my personal research and experiences so you may end up paying more or less than the figures I have given. With the current US economy in a sharp downturn coupled with the inability of virtually all health insurance plans to help in paying for lasik surgery, price is virtually always a major concern for anyone wondering about laser eye surgery.
The range I mentioned could appear to be high if you have seen advertisements promising lasik surgery for below $1000 per eye. My advice about these offers of underpriced lasik procedures is to be very skeptical of these often heavily promoted to good to be true prices. They might be leaving out the cost of for needed services like pre surgical exams and aftercare, which is a big part of the recovering from lasik process, just to get you to come in where you may be forced to listen to the hard sell. At the end of it all when the final price of your surgery and extras are given their costs are are in the same ballpark or above other centers. These ads may also be failing to specify the eligibility requirements to actually get the low price being touted. Terms may be such that a fraction of future clients can actually get their surgery done for the promoted price. Be sure to do your research thoroughly and ask as many questions as you feel you need to in order to clarify the amount you will be paying and exactly what that cost comes with. Although the cost of lasik was a major concern for me as well, there was no way I would have picked out a lasik center only based on cost.
Payment plans are one way many patients choose to pay for their lasik expenses. Lasik providers usually offer financing, but not all do. If you think you may use a payment plan, make sure you ask about and understand the terms before sign anything. All of the offices I visited in my area had financing available, although in the end I did not use financing.
If you are employed, getting in touch with your HR department could also prove of use when figuring out how you will pay for lasik surgery. Your employer may have an arrangement with a nearby lasik center to offer better prices for company employees. If you are a US worker, your employer might also offer a flexible spending account program you can join also. Flex accounts allow you to allocate money for non-reimbursible medical costs on a pre tax basis. Most elective surgery including lasik as well as many other costs can be reimbursed via an FSA. Check with your employer.
Regardless of economic conditions, the lasik eye surgery cost is virtually always going to be a factor when thinking about whether or not to have lasik. Price cannot be forgotten but it should obviously not be the sole factor influencing the decision. Be leery of low prices that look too good to be true. Discuss lasik financing options with any potential provider. Talk to your employer too, as you could be eligible for a lower price or alternate arrangement.
