What Is A Christian? (5 Day Outlook)

Okay, so I was reading in the book of James again today. It happens to be a personal favorite of mine. As I was reading I realized the book was telling me there were certain things that were expected of me as a “Christian”. So many people hear the word Christian today and they shy away. For some reason, we have developed a not-so-great reputation. People will tell you that we are judgmental, we don’t “practice what we preach”, we aren’t really concerned with the non-Christian’s life. We stab each other in the back but add, “Bless Him” or “Bless Her” to the end of gossip to show concern. I could continue on but I would depress myself. Anyway, this is when I realized James has a lot to say about how we should be acting and living as Christians. The book of James is a short, easy book to read. I have a New Living Translation; which really breaks it down for me. The book itself is only five chapters long but is filled with pertinent information. I’ll take the next five days to go through the book with you. You may wonder what a Christian has that others do no. We have a confident stand. We should have a strong sense of faith and steadfast endurance. Even if we are up against an unbelievable trial, we are told to rejoice for with this trial your faith will be tested. This testing allows endurance to grow and that lasting endurance creates a strong character making us ready for any situation. For me, I know trials can be heart wrenching sometimes; however, the word says to ask the Lord for wisdom in these situations or at anytime. Be confident in your asking for you will truly receive a response. James goes on to tell us to rejoice if we are poor. So many of us have become accustomed to getting everything we want that our faith is never tested. Those of us without much tend to lean a little more on God for our daily needs. In this time of economic downslide, it is important to remember that God will take care of us. If He feeds the bird with no soul then surely He will feed us (Matthew 6:26). As Christians patiently enduring testing we can rest assured that we will receive the “Crown of life”. Believe it or not, I am still in the first Chapter of James. We are told in this same chapter that out God will not tempt us for He is never tempted to do wrong. Temptation stirs from our own evil desires. God delivers only what is good and perfect. We are His children and most prized possession. As Christians, we can not succumb to the opinions of the world. We can’t say one thing and then do another. The Word is given to us so that we not only read it but we obey it – we must become “doers” of the Word. In doing so, we will abolish the worldly opinions and truly make a stand. If we commit to God’s perfect law them we will truly be set free. God will bless us for taking this stand.

Dear Heavenly Father, I come to you today with a petition for all reading this. Lord I ask that You would help us remain steadfast in Your Word. Lord, help us to do what Your Word commands us to do so that you will receive glory. Help us to obey your perfect law in order to secure our freedom. Lord , help us to reach out to a lost world. Let them see true Christians. Lord we thank you for all you have done and everything you are going to do. In Jesus Name, Amen.
